Winter-Proof Your Tesla

Cold weather changes how your Tesla behaves — range dips, charging slows and visibility matters more than ever. A little prep goes a long way.

Range and the cold. A cold battery is a less efficient battery. In freezing temperatures you can lose 10–30% of your usual range — that's physics, not a fault. The fix is preconditioning: warm the battery and cabin while the car is still plugged in, so you're spending grid power instead of your range.

Precondition before you drive — and before you charge. Scheduled Departure does it automatically for your morning commute. It's not just comfort: a warm battery also accepts a much faster charge at a Supercharger, so a quick preheat on the way there saves real time.

Visibility is everything. Winter is brutal on wiper blades — grit, ice and road salt tear up worn rubber, leaving streaks exactly when you need a clear view most. Fresh, winter-ready blades and topped-up washer fluid are the cheapest safety upgrade you can make all year. It's a two-minute swap.

Don't forget the air inside. In winter your climate system recirculates cabin air constantly. A clogged cabin filter means stale, dusty air and a windscreen that fogs more than it should. A fresh HEPA + carbon filter keeps the glass clear and the air clean.

The small stuff. Try to keep the battery above ~20% in the cold, expect slightly higher parked drain, and know that frozen door handles or a stuck charge port usually just need a gentle nudge or a quick cabin pre-warm to free up.
