Your Tesla's cabin filter is one of the most overlooked parts of the car — and one of the easiest wins for everyday comfort.
What it actually does. Every bit of air your climate system pulls in passes through the cabin filter first. It's the only barrier between you and the road's dust, pollen, exhaust and pollution. Ignore it and you're slowly breathing everything it should be catching.
HEPA vs standard. A basic filter catches larger particles and not much else. True HEPA (H13) captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns — dust, pollen, even bacteria — and when it's paired with an activated-carbon layer, it also absorbs odours, VOCs and exhaust fumes. In traffic, cities or high-pollen season, the difference is genuinely noticeable within a drive or two.
Airflow matters just as much. A good filter cleans the air without choking your climate system. Cheap filters trade airflow for filtration, so your fans work harder and the cabin takes longer to heat or cool. A well-engineered filter keeps both — strong airflow and serious filtration.
When to replace. Roughly every 12 months or 15,000 miles — sooner if you drive in dusty or polluted areas. The tell-tale signs: weaker airflow than you remember, smells that linger, or a windscreen that fogs up faster than it used to.
